Implementing the Bus Driver Risk Index™ for Greyhound

Our work to manage the risks of driving a bus or coach has recently expanded to include an iconic American company – Greyhound Lines, Inc founded in 1914. Greyhound is the largest provider of intercity bus transportation, across North America providing safe, enjoyable and affordable travel to nearly 18 million passengers each year. Greyhound is owned by FirstGroup plc, the leading transport operator in the United Kingdom and North America.

In its centennial year, Greyhound is keen to keep up to date with the latest innovation in road safety and taking a behavioural approach is their main focus going forward. Our key contact told us that Greyhound Lines chose to partner with DriverMetrics because we have dedicated over a quarter century to understanding the risky behaviors of drivers. That we continuously research and evolve our models over time was important to Greyhound because it meant that our Bus Driver Risk Index™ is always fresh and relevant.

For Greyhound, driving a 50-passenger motorcoach hundreds of miles at all hours of the day carries a unique set of risk factors.  The Bus Driver Risk Index™ reveals their risky behaviours to each individual driver.  By understanding themselves, drivers are open to learning new behaviors and ways of thinking that mitigate the risk of driving the Greyhound bus under demanding situations.

Our DriverMetrics® Master Trainers and graduates of the MSc in Driver Behaviour at Cranfield University have been over to the US and trained Greyhound driver trainers in how to interpret the Bus Driver Risk Index™ profiles. The specialist Greyhound coaches discuss the Bus Driver Risk Index™ profile with each individual driver and prepare a training plan that meets their needs.

Greyhound now uses the Bus Driver Risk Index™ to assess driver applicants before they attend the Greyhound Driver Training School, so that their initial training is informed by their behavioural profile.  In 2015, Greyhound will also use the Bus Driver Risk Index™ to coach their existing workforce to improve their safety record across the US.  The Bus Driver Risk Index™ will also become a part of the post-collision refresher training procedures.
